Why 'Precision Paragliding'? Simple, the aim is for the highest standard in all aspects of paragliding, this ranges from understanding of the 'How & Why' of the flight of our soft wings, to the human part of the whole aircraft, extensive use of HP&L factor (Human Performance & Limitations) is a core aspect of the training provided.
A constantly expanding libary of video clips & still images from many of the club flying and training days.
Precision Paragliding providing an alternative to the BHPA since the late 90's for BHPA & ex-BHPA pilots wishing to RE-train or new pilot entering the sport who do NOT wish to risk the standards/accident rates produced by 'normal' PG theory, practices & procedures!
In 2009 the BHPA had SEVEN deaths including 'experianced' pilots 'coaches' and 'students under training'... with an estimate of only around 30% of (non-death) PG accidents making the BHPA 'un-official' accident reports the BHPA still lists over 1,400 accidents!

Bought similar setup few weeks ago(wasp 2 wing). I had the best and most intense arms workout iever had on the beach. Cant wait to take it out again. Also glueing middle fin in my sup board so i can take it out in the water as well
Definitely requires a 'mid fin', my sup doubles as a (basic!) windsurfer so as standard takes two fins... Personally from testing SUP fins are about 2/3rd of the size required
@ParaglidingScotland so I need slightly larger fin than sup fin? That's no good as I have already bought 9inch sup fin
@@greg23842384 Hi Greg, I found best (two standard fins) I could manage was a 'broad reach' (I'm using a 7m2 foil) while getting a notable amount of leeway 😐 , to move windward it was best to simply switch back to paddling
💞Wow🤍🤍🤍💜🤍💜💜💜
Good stuff , well done

Yep, Gary's first time with this trick! While it was also my first PRACTICAL experience the Physics holds no suprise 😎 ... I'd guess my heartbeat went from around 65bpm to perhaps 68bpm 😁

no helmet ! BHPA training you have to use a helmet or no training 👍
Bhpa Ltd training BEST ADVICE is to use every possible passive protection available to increase the chance of survival... Of course the unfortunate fact is that a notable number of UK paragliding DEATHS (and numerous significant, often 'life changing' injuries) have occurred while UNDER bhpa Ltd 'instruction'....
The vast majority of my students over the decades are, as you would expect, pilots who WERE injured (or witnessed others on their bhpa Ltd courses) during their FIRST 'training'.... Hence the NEED for RE-training. Bottom line: there is a VAST range in Standards in UK paragliding, this is easiest illustrated in the VAST variation in accident rates generated by the alternatives available to potential PG'ers
Note: I've seen plenty of bhpa 'experts' fly without wearing a helmet, that's their personal choice. FWIW as a simple matter of good manners I personally wear a helmet when flying (as I often get invited to do so) with bhpa clubs 😎
Science/physics: a good high spec helmet (i.e. NOT a pg helmet) is designed to 'give survivable' impact protection a the VERY bottom end of PG typical type impacts... Where PG (and higher spec motorsport helmets etc) helmets undoubtedly DO excell is in "drag along the ground" type incidents... that is of course a fairly common INSTRUCTION Generated case seen amongst bhpa Ltd students.... Hence rather than living in hope that your passive protection MIGHT do the trick it's better to opt for quality (physics & HP&L based) training which directly addresses the Root Causality of common PG incidents (GIGO!)
Brilliant !
1997! Murray...if you can legally take your wing out to the Pub for a drink, then maybe its time to send it out to pasture. I think an Artik 4 circa 2014 or so, would have served you well there. Love your videos!
Nice going!
Good senses
cool , just wondering what glider that is ? might just be me but doesn't look like an A rated wing ?
looks like a nice little training hill, nice video
WELL DONE tom
looks like a long glide for such a small hill
With no head wind (there was a soarable east [head] wind at dusk) it would be an easy glide to next the public parking (far side of the landing field) with the actual wind glide (over ground) was shortened
Ankle breakers these Murray, think I,ll stick to the Kite Buggy but your PG expertise fits in with this sort of action, have fun!
terrible sound from the wind spoils an otherwise good video
Yep, it's just when the airflow is right~left, the first thing I did to this latest helmet was glue on a 'dead cat'... however it looks like (sounds like!) it still needs an additional cover!
another great video murray, one thing I have been wondering how exactly is it you manage to control the pitch so as to avoid taking off when not ready . not in this video but in another recent video you were doing ?
Simples (to quote Aleksandr Orlov)... For DIRECT control (while the pilot is in contact with the ground) of the wings Pitch simply think of the triangle (point down) formed by the A's the C's and the Chord of the wing. With the pilot at the bottom (point) and the flying wing (good airflow/airspeed) 'wants' to align with the airflow (WIND).... the angle of the wing relative to the LOCAL airflow (Wind Vector) governs (along with flow speed) the amount of 'lift' the wing generates. By INCREASING the amount of NEGATIVE Pitch (wing pointing more 'down' what the student rapidly gains understanding of is: Even in a twenty knot UP slope wind (vector) provided there is JUST (and no more) 'lift' to support the WEIGHT (not mass) of the wing.... it's easy (no braking etc required) to NOT take off until the pilot CHOOSES to leave the ground! "How?" Answer= by the pilot moving 'backwards' (down wind direction) OR 'forwards' (up/into wind direction) at the bottom of the previously mentioned 'triangle' the Pitch of the wing is DIRECTLY altered 😎 "Simples"
PS I can CHOOSE to walk down a 30° slope in a 20mph wind without ever being lifted off the ground DESPITE the fact my wing is NOT stalled!
thanks for the info, have you ever done a video demo of this because I've met some experienced pilots who can't do this
Ref 'walking down (under a fully flying wing) a 30° slope', to be clearly illustrated really requires filming from far enough to the side to show horizon/slope/wing pitch.... mostly when I'm out in 20kt winds no one else is with me (as it's not good for most pilots getting flights!) MH
@@ParaglidingScotland ok, cool, when i saw you doing something like this at lunan a while back i was amazed
What is the wind speed? Not a lot of movement in leaves. Dude didn't pick up after his dog.😒😒
I'd estimate (mainly based on 'crab angle' / beat ground speed) at wing height while ridge running the wind to max at around 10kts (12mph or 20km/h) Generally for good soaring here (less in winter with little vegetation to slow the ground level wind) you want say 15kts

cool to see another video from you murray but have you considered the PG wing on the beach with the kiteboard, its a lot of fun and good ground handling practice .
Generally I 'sand ski' with a paraglider (also on snow/ice etc) The main problem (based on a lot of experiance flying with a snowboard) is the Mtn Board 'stance' puts in a massive 'Harness Control' imput to the glider... flying with 'blades or skis is a better bet 🙂
PS with the fairly narrow wheels currently fitted to the 'board I've doubts of ths set up on soft sand!
Interesting to see the dune protection works with riprap in boxed sections and even a small wave return wall. I will have to come and have a look at that soon - and the rest of the Montrose sea front (for my work). Is your flying pal Alan Coffin? I met him recently :D.
Yep, Alan is off to fly in France shortly:-)
its like riding a bike for you murray ha
Great flying Murray 👍
lovely control murray
nice one murray,
Hi Murray. Still living the dream i see 😊 All the best from Belgium ! Please say hello 😊
Hi Hubert 😃 Will do! Now we're past Covid hope we might see you if you're ever back across for a flying holiday some day
excellent murray, shame there wasn't a tesco across the road you could have dropped in on.
nice 1
Amazing precision on a well practiced site!
Since the mid 90's I've probably flown (I'm not including days when only flying the golf course) Montrose about 30-50 days, but I guess only launched at the 'Sea Splash' and soared this area less than 20 days :-) PS not too suprising but not even (AFAIK) my flying pal Alan (who has soared this section/also owns a Vertex as well as several other gliders) has even top launched here, rather (before erosion of a section of dune) launched just to the NE at the dunes along the golf course and 'jumped' to this section. PPS Hope to get a trip perhaps next year back down to England & Wales (at least 10 years since last Welsh road trip!
@@ParaglidingScotlandnice flying close to the ground. I preffere soaring like this then being high in the sky. It amazes that this old glider is still airworthy. It seems to be well trimmed and porosity still must still be good
@@greg23842384 Yep, this one has only about 300-350 ish hrs but I always (unlike some of my other Vertex's... kept it for flying on dry days!)

Murray... Please keep the canopy off the damn mud...lol Happy Easter... Dwight. Glendale Arizona USA.
You have to post more videos. Always like watching them and remembering the great time I had flying with you.!
Hi Simon, just had a couple of wee (welding) jobs today so actually out flying a speedwing at Stanergate just now 😄 hopefully (spent another grand and a half last month on new radio & transponder!) will start (post COVID reduction in airtime) travelling to more 'photogenic' flying sites this year 👍
Hi Murray, are you still on the original lines? I love those colours, I borrowed a Phocus many years ago in the same colour scheme.
Yep (original lines) I've gone through a considerable number of line sets on many of my Vertex gliders, I used to replace A's at 100hrs, A+B's at 200 and all three at 300 hrs!
Its been a while since I've seen your vids. Thanks for sharing!
I've got an original Harley paraglider from 1990... If you saw it you would NEVER believe it was that old lol... Good stuff Murray, thanks for posting. Dwight. Glendale, Arizona just across the 'Pond'...
This one is a good bit short of the oldest of my 'historic' wings, personally they (provided the lift is strong enough) can be as much fun to fly as current wings 😀
@@ParaglidingScotland I immediately recognized the site that you were using... Seen that site in your other videos... Thanks for taking the time to respond... 2:35 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in Glendale Arizona...

A bit early in the morning for shouting 😀
Bang on target to hit your ladder Murray!
Hi Aidan, actually it was where the ladder HAD been for the first 3/4 of the sawing.... once I was happy that it only needed a little bit more cutting and a bit off mass / momentum to get it to rotate 90° and drop.... I moved the ladder (and ME!) out of the target area 😎
Hope you made soup from the inners and the seeds were out for the birds
Great video! 👍
briliant !Nova Vertex still flying !!! Good job👍👍👏👏
That one is 1 of TEN Nova Vertex paragliders I own 😀
Thank you 😊
Is that a Gin Bobcat Murray?
Yep in the 13.5m2 size, FWIW the smallest speed wing I've flown was (from memory) 7.5m2, now that was F A S T 😀
Man of a million talents, awesome
You were gone for quite a while. And now that you're back your flying seems a lot more timid and hesitant. Were you injured in an accident?
? I've not been posting any edited videos, is that what your refering to ? FWIW Apart from the duration of COVID lockdown I've been flying (I had a bunch of flying sites that weren't affected by 2001's foot&mouth) and the three days shut down following 9/11 continuously since the mid 90's.... Well over ten thousand hours airtime injury free (not counting the occasional minor bruise / scrape.
Do you still teach
Yes
Still at it old fella, well done!
